Stress, Anxiety & My ADHD

Author’s note: I remember how overwhelmed I was by everything at this point of when I wrote in this entry. I often get times like these where I feel this way and now I know it’s my brain trying to tell me I need to take a step back for a bit to take care of myself. It’s a learning curve, for sure but I’ve noticed since then I’ve gotten better at recognizing when I’m starting to get overwhelmed. Progress! Giving myself a little pat on the back for that 🙂

Do you ever get so frustrated with your brain that you want to take it out for a few days and come back to it when you’re ready? I know it sounds unrealistic but there are a lot of moments where I want this. To take a break from my brain because it’s exhausting. As much as I like to look at everything in an optimistic perspective, I’m still human and have bad days/weeks/months, even years (especially in the past) where I’m beyond exhausted from it all.

Days where it’s difficult to get out of bed, shower, eat something. Somehow lately, I manage to get out of bed but there are other tasks I’ve been finding hard to complete or start. My dog is the biggest help with getting out of bed, but that’s another blog post for another day of the topic of how amazing furry companions are. Aside from that, I have been feeling really tired recently.

So so tired.

I’ve had trouble staying asleep, waking up constantly, consistent nightmares.

All of it I know is tied to stress and anxiety. It has come to the point where I’ve even had to start a week of social media detox, taking a step back from everything that has been overwhelming me.

The best way I could describe how social media overwhelms me at times is how I explained it to my sister the other day: when you’re downloading so many files (scrolling/doom scrolling) on your computer (my brain) and it starts lagging to the point (anxiety overload from over processing) where all you can do to fix it is restart the entire device (take a mental health break).

My ADHD makes it feel this way, something I’ve come to realize over the last couple of months.

So far, I’m on my third day of my seven day break of detoxing and I feel it already starting to help. I’ve been waking up with more energy and focus for the tasks I want to do for longer periods of time. I’ve started doing crafts such as water coloring in which I’ve been wanting to do for a long time (turns out I have a knack for it!) It’s been refreshing and I can tell now how much my brain was in need of it.

Oftentimes I forget I’m allowed to take breaks like these.

I never give myself permission to (the grind mentality). My entire life I’ve associated my worth with how productive I am, which is a horrible mentality to have. However, in my culture I’ve grown up with as well as my environment, it’s the only mindset I’ve known up until the last few years.

With taking this break, it’s the start of breaking those patterns. I want to continue adding healthier habits to my life because the ones I’ve slowly added so far to my daily routine have had a positive impact on not only my brain’s well being but my physical too.
